MFA Cup 2026: La Cure Waves seal a historical double

La Cure Waves completed one of the greatest seasons in Mauritian football history after defeating ASPL 2000 in a thrilling MFA Cup final on Sunday at Côte d’Or Sports Complex. The Port Louis outfit secured the last trophy of the domestic campaign to achieve a remarkable and historic league-and-cup double.

Only a week after being crowned champions of the Super League for the first time in the club’s history, La Cure Waves once again showed their determination, resilience and fighting spirit by overcoming a stubborn ASPL 2000 side following a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory (10-9). After more than 120 minutes of intense football ended in a 1-1 draw, the fate of the trophy was decided from the spot in one of the most nerve-racking finals witnessed in recent years.

The encounter began at a furious pace, with both teams eager to impose themselves physically and tactically from the opening whistle. La Cure Waves struck first in the 9th minute through Adrien François, whose goal sparked celebrations among the Yellow and Blacks supporters. Their advantage, however, lasted only a few minutes as ASPL 2000 quickly responded through Mattéo Monplé, who levelled the score in the 20th minute after capitalising on a well-worked move.

What followed was an absorbing battle filled with intensity, commitment and end-to-end action. Both teams created opportunities and fought tirelessly for every ball, but neither side managed to find the decisive breakthrough during normal time. The physical nature of the contest became even more evident in extra time as fatigue started to take its toll.

La Cure Waves faced an additional setback in the 92nd minute when captain Fabrice Augustin received a red card, forcing his team to play almost the entirety of extra time with ten men. Despite being numerically disadvantaged, Jérôme Thomas’ men displayed outstanding solidarity and mental strength to resist ASPL 2000’s pressure and keep their hopes alive.

The final eventually headed to penalties, where tension reached its highest point. In an extraordinary shoot-out filled with suspense and emotion, both teams converted repeatedly before La Cure Waves finally emerged victorious 10-9, sparking scenes of jubilation among players, staff and supporters.

This latest success crowns an extraordinary rise for the club. Just two seasons ago, La Cure Waves were competing in the lower division. Today, they stand at the summit of Mauritian football after capturing both the Super League title and the MFA Cup in the same season — a feat that confirms the club’s rapid transformation into a national powerhouse.

The double-winning campaign will now open the doors to continental football, with La Cure Waves set to represent Mauritius in the preliminary rounds of the CAF Champions League in the coming months. As for ASPL 2000, their strong season was also rewarded with qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup.

Beyond the silverware, the final itself will long be remembered for its intensity, drama and spectacle — a fitting conclusion to an unforgettable season for La Cure Waves.
