The Lady Dodos fall to a clinical Black Queens of Ghana

The Mauritius women’s national football team saw their dream of qualifying for the Paris 2024 OlympicGames come to an end after suffering a heavy 10–0 aggregate defeat against a clinical Ghanaian side over two legs (3-0; 7-0) in the CAF Olympic qualifiers. Despite the disappointing result, the campaign provided the Lady Dodos with a valuable opportunity to compete against a more experienced opponent and gain important lessons at the international level.

Ghana demonstrated its attacking strength, technical ability and tactical discipline throughout thetie, makingit difficult for Mauritius to keep pace with their opponents. The significant difference inexperience and competitive exposure between the two sides was evident, as Ghana capitalised on its scoring opportunities to secure a convincing aggregate victory and advance to the next stage of the qualification campaign.

For Mauritius, however, the defeat should not overshadow the importance of participating in suchahigh-level competition. Facing a strong African opponent offered the players valuable exposuretothe intensity, pace and physical demands of international football. These experiences can helptheteam identify areas for improvement, particularly in defensive organisation, ball possession, attackingtransitions and the ability to maintain concentration under sustained pressure.

Although the Lady Dodos were unable to achieve their Olympic qualification objective, their participation represents another step in the development of women’s football in Mauritius. The team’s determination to compete on the continental stage highlights the potential within the squad and the importance of continuing to invest in the growth of the women’s game.

Moving forward, consistent international fixtures, improved training facilities, stronger domestic competitions and greater support for young female players will be essential in helping Mauritius close the gap with more established African football nations. With the right preparation, coaching and developmentopportunities, the lessons learned from this campaign could serve as a foundation for future progress.

While the road to Paris 2024 ended in disappointment, the Lady Dodos return with valuable experience and a clearer understanding of the challenges ahead. Their journey serves as a reminder that buildingacompetitive national team takes time, patience and sustained commitment. For Mauritian women’s football, the focus now shifts towards learning from this setback, strengthening the squad and preparing for future international challenges with renewed determination and ambition.
