A hard-fought draw to start

Mauritius launched their COSAFA Cup 2025 campaign with a determined performance, earning a goalless draw against Zimbabwe in a tightly contested Group A opener at Toyota Stadium. While the match ended without goals, it was far from uneventful — featuring disciplined defending, a disallowed goal, and moments of real intensity.

Making their first appearance in a group that also includes South Africa and Mozambique,Ā Club MĀ showed composure and organization, particularly in defence, where captainĀ Lindsay RoseĀ led by example. The experienced centre-back delivered a commanding display that earned him theĀ Player of the MatchĀ accolade.

The standout moment of the match arrived in the 73rd minute, whenĀ Stephan De RobillardĀ appeared to break the deadlock with a well-taken goal. However, after a VAR check, refereeĀ Godfrey NkhakanangaĀ disallowed the strike for a handball in the build-up — a decision that sparked frustration on the Mauritian bench and in the stands.

Despite the setback, Mauritius remained composed and continued to frustrate Zimbabwe’s attacking efforts. GoalkeeperĀ Kevin Jean LouisĀ was sharp when called upon, while the defensive quatuor ofĀ FranƧois, Rose,Ā Collard andĀ MootooĀ kept the Zimbabwean forwards at bay.

Speaking after the match, head coachĀ Guillaume MoullecĀ expressed disappointment with the result and questioned his side’s approach in the final third: ā€œI’m very frustrated with the draw. We lacked urgency in the attacking phase and didn’t adapt to the pitch conditions, which really affected our rhythm. We need to be more direct and decisive going forward. The next game is crucial — we need a win.ā€

While the draw gives Mauritius their first point of the tournament, it also highlights the need for greater attacking sharpness in upcoming matches. With a solid defensive foundation now in place, Club M will look to build momentum in their next fixture.

Mauritius will faceĀ MozambiqueĀ onĀ Saturday, June 8, in a key Group A clash that could shape their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
