Republic Cup 2026: Cercle de Joachim make it three

Despite an inconsistent season, Cercle de Joachim rediscovered their winning touch at the perfect moment, claiming the Republic Cup on Wednesday evening with a hard-fought 1–0 victory after extra time against ASPL 2000 at the Côte d’Or Sports Complex. In a tense and closely contested final that lacked clear-cut opportunities, it was Jason Ferré who emerged as the hero, netting the decisive goal to hand the Curepipe-based club their third triumph in the competition.

Both sides entered the final under pressure, enduring difficult campaigns in the Super League and looking to this cup final as a chance to salvage pride and restore confidence. The high stakes were evident from the outset, with both teams adopting a cautious approach. Defensive organization took precedence over attacking flair, resulting in a first half largely devoid of genuine goal-scoring chances.

While there were occasional forward movements from both teams, neither goalkeeper was seriously tested in the opening 45 minutes. The midfield battle proved intense but often scrappy, with possession frequently changing hands and neither side able to impose a clear rhythm on the game.

The match sparked into life shortly after the break. In the 47th minute, ASPL 2000 thought they had taken the lead through Daniel Israël. The Port Louis attacker latched onto a well-delivered cross and finished confidently, sending the ball into the back of the net. However, celebrations were cut short as the assistant referee raised his flag for offside. Replays and reactions suggested that the decision was, at best, highly questionable, and it quickly became a major talking point among players, staff, and spectators alike.

That controversial moment appeared to inject a sense of urgency into the encounter. ASPL 2000 pushed forward with greater intent, while Cercle de Joachim responded by tightening their defensive structure and looking to exploit spaces on the counterattack. Despite the increased tempo, clear chances remained scarce, with both defenses holding firm under pressure.

As the match wore on, fatigue began to set in, and the intensity dipped slightly. Neither side managed to find the breakthrough during regulation time, forcing the final into extra time.

It was during this decisive period that Cercle de Joachim finally found the solution. Jason Ferré, who had been relatively quiet throughout the match, seized his moment with clinical efficiency. Taking advantage of a rare lapse in the ASPL 2000 defense, he finished with composure to break the deadlock and send his team into the lead.

ASPL 2000 attempted to respond in the closing stages, throwing men forward in search of an equalizer, but Cercle de Joachim remained disciplined and resolute at the back. Their defensive solidity ensured they held on to their slender advantage until the final whistle, sparking celebrations among players and supporters.

After the match, Cercle de Joachim head coach Rajub Hemrajsingh stressed the importance of the victory, acknowledging both the challenge posed by their opponents and the expectations placed on his team.

“ASPL 2000 played some very good football, but our strategy worked. We brought intensity from the beginning of the match, although we struggled at times to convert our chances. The difference came from a moment of quality through Jason Ferré. Considering the resources and structure we have, we knew we had an obligation to win. In the end, we did what was necessary, and that is the most important thing,” he said.

On the other side, ASPL 2000 head coach Sarjoo Gowreesunkur remained pragmatic in defeat, highlighting the broader context of his team’s ongoing development.

“We prepared well for this final, and overall the level of play was good. This team is still in a rebuilding phase, and the players are showing encouraging signs. Of course, there are also aspects we need to improve, but the process is ongoing. Our objective is not only to compete but also to contribute to the growth of Mauritian football and to ensure that the sport can provide a real livelihood for players in the future,” he explained.

While the match itself may not be remembered for its spectacle, it will undoubtedly be significant for Cercle de Joachim, who managed to turn a challenging season into a moment of silverware. For ASPL 2000, despite the disappointment, the performance offered glimpses of promise as they continue to rebuild and look ahead to future challenges.
