NSL (Week 1): Title holder stumble in league opener

Fresh off their victory in the MFA Shield, Cercle de Joachim completely missed their league debut, suffering a heavy 3–0 defeat to AS Vacoas/Phoenix — a result as unexpected as it was resounding. For the reigning champions, this opening setback already serves as a warning: this new season will offer no certainties, not even for the most decorated teams.

In a match where nothing went their way, the Curepipe side displayed worrying signs, particularly in their attacking movement and defensive organisation. The Vacoas outfit, on the other hand, disciplined and determined from start to finish, capitalised brilliantly on their opponents’ shortcomings to secure a prestigious win — one that immediately propels them into the spotlight as a team to watch.

Meanwhile, La Cure Waves wasted no time making a statement. The Résidence La Cure club struck hard on Matchday 1, steamrolling PAS Mates 4–0 in the Capital derby. Driven by an inspired attack, relentless pressing, and an already well-oiled collective structure, the suburban side take command of the Super League with a confidence that is impossible to ignore.

In a one-sided encounter, the Port Louis outfit dictated the pace from the opening whistle to the final one. Their attacking sharpness, combined with impressive defensive stability, suggests a team with ambition — one that fully intends to fight for top honours. This emphatic victory gives them an early but significant psychological edge, and clearly signals their intentions for the rest of the campaign.

Close behind, ASVP produced the first major upset of the season. Defeating the reigning champions on opening day is never trivial: the Vacoas side delivered a performance full of intensity, boldness, and conviction, sending a strong message to the league’s other contenders. Their display has already reshaped the early picture at the top of the table and hints at a championship far more open than expected.

Pamplemousses SC, for their part, logically prevailed in the Northern derby, dispatching AS Rivière-du-Rempart 3–0. Composed and efficient, the Northerners never wavered. Without even needing to push to their limits, they showed once again that they remain a structured side capable of imposing their rhythm whenever required. This opening win places them immediately among the early frontrunners and provides a solid platform on which to build momentum.

The week one delivered a compelling blend of confirmations, surprises, and promises for the season ahead. Between La Cure Waves’ dominant display, ASVP’s shock triumph, Pamplemousses SC’s assured performance, and the reigning champions’ abrupt fall, the early trends are already taking shape.

One thing is certain: although the season has only just begun, the tone has been set — and it is decidedly gripping. High stakes, fierce competition for the top spots, and early suspense hint at a thrilling Super League campaign in the making.
