AFCON 2021 – Mission accomplished for Imtehaz Heeralall

It is with a sense of having done his duty that our fellow countryman, Imtehaz Heeralall, has returned to Mauritius after nearly one month in Cameroon. Heerallal was among the referees officiating for the AFCON 2021 and took charge of his first match on Tuesday, 11 January 2022, which saw the defending champion Algeria playing against Sierra-Leone at the Douala Stadium, a game which ended in a goalless 0-0 draw.

The Mauritian referee was then back in action few days later, acting as fourth official for the matches Mauritiania vs. Gambia and Guinea-Bissau vs. Egypt. A goal from Mohamed Salah scored in the 69th minute gave the victory to the Egyptians.

He also officiated the game Burkina Faso vs. Ethiopia and was called to act as fourth official again in the round 16 for the match opposing Burkina Fason to Gabon. Burkina Faso beat 10-man Gabon on penalties to reach the quarter-finals. As for Imtehaz Heerallal, he said to be very satisfied with his performance and contribution throughout the tournament and is now looking forward for his next call in February 2022 for the African Champions League competition.
